Pharmacological Profile & Mechanism of Action
What it is: Vesugen is a short synthetic Khavinson tripeptide (Lys-Glu-Asp) specifically targeted at vascular endothelial tissue. It interacts with vascular smooth muscle cell metabolism, preserves arterial wall elasticity, and supports microvascular barrier integrity in aged endothelial cell models.
How it works: KED enters endothelial cell nuclei via non-receptor peptide transport, interacting selectively with the promoter region of the MKI67 gene (-14 to +12 bp relative to transcription start) to stimulate Ki-67 expression. In vascular cultures, it upregulates endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), downregulates endothelin-1, and modulates VCAM-1 synthesis to preserve vascular compliance.
Why researchers study it: Investigators evaluate Vesugen to study microvascular permeability, age-associated endothelial dysfunction, vascular wall remodeling in atherosclerosis models, and microcirculatory perfusion preservation in ischemic tissue assays.
