What it is: SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2) engineered specifically to target and repair the inner membrane of mitochondria.
How it works: SS-31 selectively penetrates cell membranes and binds with high affinity to cardiolipin, a unique phospholipid found exclusively on the inner mitochondrial membrane. In aging or damaged cells, oxidized cardiolipin causes the mitochondrial cristae to collapse and leak free radicals. SS-31 restores cardiolipin structure, stabilizes the electron transport chain, boosts ATP energy production, and halts toxic ROS generation.
