What it is: Humanin is a 24-amino-acid peptide encoded within the 16S ribosomal RNA region of mitochondrial DNA, originally discovered while screening for genes that protect brain cells from Alzheimer's disease.
How it works: Humanin functions as a cytoprotective shield. It binds to the pro-apoptotic protein Bax, preventing it from puncturing mitochondrial membranes and stopping premature cell death.
