Pharmacological Profile & Mechanism of Action
What it is: Dihexa (N-hexanoic-Tyr-Ile-(6) aminohexanoic amide) is an orally active, blood-brain barrier-permeable small-molecule peptide derivative developed at Washington State University.
How it works: Dihexa binds with high affinity to Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF) and its receptor c-Met. Remarkably, in preclinical assays, Dihexa was found to be orders of magnitude more potent than BDNF at inducing spinogenesis—the physical creation of new dendritic spines and synaptic connections between neurons.
Why researchers study it: Researched for reversing severe cognitive deficits, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, and building vast new synaptic networks in the brain.
