Pharmacological Profile & Mechanism of Action
What it is: HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone composed of 237 amino acids across two non-covalently linked alpha and beta subunits, sharing structural homology with native pituitary Luteinizing Hormone (LH).
How it works: HCG binds directly to the shared LH/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR) on testicular Leydig cells in males and ovarian theca/granulosa cells in females. In males, it stimulates cyclic AMP and cholesterol desmolase (CYP11A1), driving intratesticular testosterone synthesis and maintaining spermatogenesis during gonadotropin suppression. Its biological half-life (~24–36 hours) is substantially longer than native LH (~20 minutes), providing steady physiological stimulation.
Why researchers study it: Studied for post-cycle endocrine recovery, preserving testicular trophism and spermatogenesis during TRT, male hypogonadism research, fertility optimization, and neurosteroid pathway support.
